64bit guests suffer fast clock drift -> fixed in SVN/3.1.4

Description

Host: Intel i5 750 cpu, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, VirtualBox 3.1.2

Guests: Windows 2008 R2 64bit, 1 virtual cpu core, 1GB RAM, Guest Addtions v3.1.2 installed.

Problem: Fast clock drift in guest. Clock gains 12 seconds for every 1 minute passed ie. Clock is drifting positively by 20% each minute. This is not experienced in 32bit guests on the same host - only 64bit guests exhibit this behaviour.

Further information:

If I uninstall the Guest Additions the clock drift stops. This problem seems to be associated with the v3.1.2 Guest Additions for Windows 64bit guests.

Changed the HPET mode in the host's BIOS to 64bit. This action reduces the clock drift to a gain of 6 seconds for every 1 minute passed, or 10% each minute (with Guest Additions 3.1.2 installed).

Extracted the v3.1.0.r55467 VBoxGuestAdditions.iso from the install file. Installed that on the guest and the clock drift stopped.

It looks like a bug has been introduced in the v3.1.2.r56127 Guest Additions for 64bit Windows guests.

Work-around at the moment is to uninstall the v3.1.2 Guest Additions and install the v3.1.0 Guest Additions in 64bit Windows guests.

I am using 64 bits Ubuntu host and 32 bits Windows XP guest, and I see the clock drift both with VB 3.1.2 and the new 3.1.4. Yes, I upgraded the Guest Tools.

Not to invalidate your issue, but 3.1.4 completely solved the issue for me. Perhaps you could could give some more info, like how it is drifting, e.g. gaining 20% per minute like the OP. Or is it speeding up and slowing down. This particular bug had to do with 64-bit guests and you have a 32-bit guest. There is no way someone can identify and fix what you are reporting with the little bit of info you've given.

Please never ever reopen a ticket if:

  1. your problem is different from the reported one (64 bits linux vs 32 bits windows)
  2. you don't specify any information (VBox.log is required)

The right action in this case is to open a new ticket with a proper description and VBox.log. Thanks.
